The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood samples from patients for diagnostic testing, transfusions, donations, or research. The role requires precision, attention to detail, and excellent patient care skills to ensure the safe and efficient collection of blood specimens.

Key Responsibilities

- *Blood Collection:*

- Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks to collect blood samples from patients of all ages.

- Ensure proper identification and labeling of collected specimens.

- Adhere to protocols for blood sample storage and transportation.

- *Patient Interaction:*

- Greet patients and verify their identification and consent for procedures.

- Explain procedures to patients and address any concerns to ensure their comfort and cooperation.

- Provide post-procedure care, such as applying bandages and advising on aftercare.

- *Safety and Compliance:*

- Follow strict infection control and safety procedures to prevent contamination and ensure patient and staff safety.

- Dispose of biohazardous materials according to established guidelines.

- Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.

- *Documentation and Data Entry:*

- Accurately record patient information, procedures performed, and sample details in the laboratory information system.

- Ensure timely and accurate entry of data for laboratory processing and analysis.

- *Quality Assurance:*

- Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.

- Assist in monitoring and maintaining equipment and supplies.

### Qualifications

- *Education:*

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- Completion of a phlebotomy training program accredited by a recognized certifying body.

- *Experience:*

- Previous experience as a phlebotomist is preferred but not required.

- Experience in a healthcare setting is beneficial.

- *Skills:*

- Proficiency in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques.

- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

- *Certifications:*

- Phlebotomy certification from a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, NHA, NCCT) is preferred.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.

### Working Conditions

- *Physical Requirements:*

- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.

- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed.

- Manual dexterity to handle needles and other phlebotomy equipment safely.

- *Schedule:*

- May include day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

- Flexibility to work varying hours based on laboratory or clinic needs.
