One of several Champagne and wine related items acquired at a vide maison in Troyes in the Champagne region, this had been a display item in a home bar for many years. Originally used in Champagne production at a local vineyard, I’m advised it dates to the early 1800s. Marked with the manufacturer’s mark GARDON MACON this was cast at the bronze foundry of that name in Macon, Burgundy. It also has further intriguing marks - what appears to be a stamped mark of A L to the tap top and either side of the barrel, and a hand carved mark of M V to one side. I’m informed these are likely to be a either an artisan’s mark, a vineyard mark, an owner’s mark, a date mark or a combination of those. Probably the oldest barrel tap we have had it’s a true antique. We have sold several of these before for use as garden fountain or water features as well as to breweriana, wine, and bronze collectors. Well used but still sound and heavy this makes a great talking point in a dining room, home bar, man cave etc, or even in the garden. In good antique condition with staining, wear, dents, and knocks consistent with it’s age and use - please examine photos carefully for condition. The photos best show the condition of this. Consists of a bronze barrel or spigot tap. On acquisition this was in a dirty, dusty condition and has since been cleaned. I’m sure it would polish up well if required. Larger and heavier than others I’ve seen it is in good sound condition. The spigot tap works and the through pipe is clear. Marked as described above. Measures approximately: 25 cm long, 13 cm tall, 8.5 cm wide handle width, 5 cm max barrel width, weighs 1.75 kg, The wine bottle is to show scale and not included!
